Argentina

Argentina is the fifth largest wine producer in the world, with 80% of wine coming from the Mendoza region. Not only is Mendoza the largest region in Argentina, it’s also one of the world’s best regions for wine production.

Due to the high altitude and desert climate Argentina’s vineyards rarely face the problems of insects, fungi and other diseases that damage grapes in other countries. This means that Pesticides and herbicides can be used sparingly.

April 17th is known as World Malbec Day and commemorates the day that Argentina’s president Domingo Faustino Sarmiento officially made it his mission to transform the country’s wine industry. In 1853 he tasked Michel Aimé Pouget, a French soil expert, to bring over new vines to help revitalise the production of wine. One of his most popular selections was Malbec and it’s now become Argentina’s best known varietal.
